Meet MESTRE LUCAS CORVO

Mestre Lucas Corvo

Mestre Lucas Corvo — born Luiz Carlos Assunção Silva — grew up in Rosa Neto, Eunapolis, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, the birthplace of capoeira. His journey with the art began early and never stopped.

At nine years old, he encountered a capoeirista on the streets — a moment that would change the course of his life. Inspired, he began training seriously, and capoeira became his calling.

Over the following decades, Mestre Lucas Corvo trained under a lineage of respected mestres including Mestre Mano and Mestre Renato, earning his instructor cord in 1993. It was during his years in São Paulo that he met the man who would become his primary mestre and greatest influence. After arriving in São Paulo and beginning to teach at Academia Motriz, Mestre Lucas Corvo had the pleasure of meeting Mestre Canguru — and it was under Mestre Canguru’s guidance that he deepened his practice and ultimately graduated to Mestre Primeiro Grau on November 19, 2003.

Mestre Canguru’s influence is woven into everything Mestre Lucas teaches — his precision, his musicality, his deep respect for capoeira’s roots, and his commitment to passing the art on with integrity.

While based in São Paulo for thirteen years, Mestre Lucas Corvo taught across multiple academies and performed Afro-Brazilian cultural arts — capoeira, maculelê, and samba de roda — with the show group Rabo de Arraia.

Mestre Lucas Corvo has been living and teaching in the United States since 2007, first in Oakland, California, then for nine years in Colorado, where he built a flourishing capoeira community in Boulder and Fort Collins. He now calls the Minneapolis area home, where he continues to teach, travel, and participate in rodas, workshops, batizados, and shows across the country and internationally.

With over thirty years of practice spanning Brazil, the United States, and beyond, Mestre Lucas Corvo brings rare depth, warmth, and authenticity to every class he teaches. Training with him is not just learning capoeira — it is connecting with its living history.

Come train. Come play. Axé.
